In the far future, civilization has colonized the galactic super cluster. Working together, millions of civilizations assembled a super massive black hole at the center off the cluster. Billions of times more massive than the black hole at the center of a galaxy, this central singularity serves to bind the super cluster together and keep it from being driven apart by the expansion of space.
Effectively immortal from life extension technology, many people have been alive for billions of years. Civilization is incredibly stable and progress and change are slow. Between fusion, antimatter and singularity energy, there is so much energy, matter and space that projects are increasingly extravagant.
Travel between solar systems and galaxies is routine, massive laser arrays exists across the universe to accelerate and slow ships, due to life extension and the fast time scales, travel times of thousands of years are considered trivial.
On the most advanced worlds, people built "Star Bridges" between systems, strings of magnetically contained singularities which contract the fabric of space, effectively folding space to greatly reduce the time of travel. Using advanced materials, massive cylindrical structures encase the black hole roadway. High speed trains effectively run between solar systems, cutting interstellar travel time down to mere hours. These are highly costly in mass and require huge energies to maintain, however in the golden age of civilization, more than 1000 systems were interconnected across 20 Galaxies (Moved nearer to each other to orbit the super black hole.)
Information and matter can also be transferred along these highways, allowing for an intergalactic internet of sorts to be built. Central worlds tap into the super fast transmission along Star bridges and then transmit out at the speed of light to neighboring systems.
Fully colonized systems employ some variation of the Dyson Swarm, a cloud of habitats orbiting the star at various distances, absorbing all the light and energy it emits. By working together, the swarm has various abilities it can utilize. One of these is to selectively reflect sunlight in certain directions and effectively accelerate the star, carrying the solar system with it. This allows the Dyson swarm to move as a defensive or offensive capability.
A swarm can also channel the energy of the sun into a massive energy beam to incinerate even planet sized objects. This has obvious defensive or offensive capabilities, but can also be used to accelerate ships or other objects by beaming energy to them.
Another function of the Dyson Swarm is as a massive computational brain. By absorbing and radiating energy out in layers, a swarm can effectively utilize the maximum calculatory power of the energy coming from the sun.
In the Golden Age, society has created gravity lasers, chambers that can amplify and store gravity waves and then unleash them in a single direction. This gravity beam allows for the retrieval of distant objects, meaning distant asteroids or planets can be drawn in remotely. This is how the Galactic super cluster was assembled.
Ships can be powered by fusion, antimatter or singularity, power can also be continuously beamed to the ship by lasers. Supplies and raw materials can also be sent to the ship in super accelerated beams moving near the speed of light.
By the time of the dark universe, Trillions of years in the future, all the stars have gone out and civilization is breaking down, consuming more and more of its infrastructure to power their very survival, the star bridges are disassembled, whole galaxies are thrown into black holes to draw the energy out. Desperation sets in....
